TechCrunch Review: Google Nexus S

For the last few days we’ve been using the Google Nexus S, manufactured by Samsung, with the new Android 2.3 “Gingerbread” operating system. This is a phone that was designed with direct input from the Google Android team. And like its predecessor, the Nexus One, which was released in January 2010, it has a “clean” install of Android. That means there is no additional software layer from third party OEMs or carriers to interfere with the user experience. Like the Nexus One, this will become the reference phone for this generation of Android.

Unlike the Nexus One, the phone was not built from scratch – the starting point was the Samsung Galaxy S, released earlier this year. And Google will not be selling this phone directly to consumers. They say that experiment is over, and this phone will be available initially at Best Buy in the U.S. (on T-Mobile) and Carphone Warehouse in the U.K. Google says the phone is currently expected to be available starting December 16, although pre-orders might be taken earlier.

The phone does not fail to please. It is significantly faster than the Nexus One (and most current generation phones), has a high-end AMOLED 400 x 800 resolution screen that is second only to the iPhone 4, and is NFC-enabled. Like all Android phones it is dead simple to set up, assuming you use Gmail, Google Calendar, Google contacts, etc. But it’s Google’s various apps, some of which are unavailable for the iPhone, that make it the best phone on the market today.

The phone has a sleeker design than the Nexus One, although its generic black plastic case doesn’t exactly scream for attention. The case also feels somewhat cheap, unlike the solid feel of the iPhone and some previous Android phones. But it is very thin and light – just 4.55 ounces (slightly heavier than the Galaxy S). The phone’s dimensions are 63mm x 123.9mm x 10.88mm (slightly thicker, taller and wider than the iPhone 4, and with a larger screen). It is significantly svelter than the EVO or the Droid X, previous generation Android phones that we thought were too bulky.

Hardware:

The Nexus S uses the 1 GHz Hummingbird processor, which absolutely zooms and also seems to handle running multiple apps and background processes well compared to previous Android devices we’ve used. The 4 inch Super AMOLED 480×800 touchscreen has very deep blacks and viewing angles and is, as we said above, second only to the slightly smaller but higher resolution iPhone 4 display.

Battery life is good – much, much better than the dismal HTC EVO. We’ve been getting 6+ hours of heavy voice/data usage on the removable 1500 mAh Lithium Ion battery. Google’s official specs are up to 400 minutes of talk time on 3G, 841 minutes on 2G, and standby time of 428/714 hours on 3G/2G. That may be somewhat enthusiastic, but battery life is certainly not a big problem compared to other devices we’ve used this year.

The phone has both a rear facing 5 megapixel camera, with a flash, as well as a VGA front facing camera. Both performed well. The phone also has a gyroscope, accelerometer, compass, proximity sensor, haptic feedback and a light sensor. It comes with 16 GB of internal flash memory; there is no expansion slot.

Wifi, GPS and bluetooth all behaved flawlessly.

And, as Google CEO Eric Schmidt hinted at during Web 2.0 Summit, the Nexus S has Near Field Communication (NFC) built in — a new feature that Gingerbread adds support for. At this point you probably won’t have many reasons to have it activated (you can shut it off to preserve battery), but NFC is likely to prove very important over the next couple years. Eventually, the technology will allow you to use your phone in place of a credit card by simply tapping the phone against special sensors in retail stores. NFC will also allow for phones to swap data between each other with a minimal amount of hassle, as soon as developers add support for that (the Nexus S chip supports both read and write operations). This is basically future-proofing the phone, and a year from now I expect that most Android phones (and likely iPhones) will be shipping with NFC.

Google’s noise cancellation software is also present. When combined with the excellent audio hardware it results in very high quality calls. In test calls from my car the recipient said they heard very little background noise – the iPhone in particular performed terribly in a similar test.

So far, not one dropped call.

Software:

We’ve been a big proponent of using Android phones along with Google Voice and other Google apps. It makes setup of a new phone very easy – a minute or two at most – and we both continue to use our existing Google Voice phone numbers for inbound and outbound phones. The Nexus S comes with the Google Voice app pre-installed, saving additional minutes.

But the main event is Gingerbread operating system, which comes installed on the phone. No, the UI hasn’t seen a ground-up redesign (that’s coming in Honeycomb), but it’s improved in a lot of small ways, like the switch from a drab gray to a black notification bar (which actually helps save battery).

It comes with old crowd-pleasers like the on-the-fly creation of Wi-Fi hotspots. And Google has also iterated on the user interface, particularly the keyboard. It’s not as polished as the iPhone, but text entry is significantly faster than previous Android phones, with less errors. It is also much better at predicting words, and copy-and-paste has been improved as well. If the iPhone is 8/10 on text input, the Nexus One is probably 5/10 and the Nexus S is a solid 6/10.

Gingerbread also supports VoIP/SIP calling.

Best of all, of course, is the fact that the Nexus S is a clean install of Android, and a pure Google experience. There is no messy third-party software to muck things up.

The Nexus S Experience:

We can write all day about a phone, but the real test with us is whether we continue to use it after a post. The EVO and the Droid X were quickly forgotten for us. Michael tested the iPhone 4 but its lack of point to point navigation and unwillingness to play well with Google Voice made him ultimately give it up after a month and move back to the Nexus One (Google Voice has finally made it to the iPhone, but it isn’t as deeply integrated into the OS as on Android, and probably never will be). The Nexus S will almost certainly be his go-to phone for the next few months. Michael is leaving today for a week in Europe, and taking only this phone with him. The fact that it’s unlocked means he can add a sim card once he is in Paris and continue to use it without extravagant additional charges.

Google’s voice search/input applications and Google Navigation continue to make Android phones in general significantly better mobile devices than the iPhone. Conversely, Google continues to flail on media, and the device is not any better than previous Android phones at dealing with stored music. That’s why Michael will also be bringing an iPad to Europe, which integrates perfectly with iTunes.

The bottom line is this. If you are an iPhone user this isn’t going to make you switch. If you’re an Android user you will want this phone more than any other. If you’re currently neither, we recommend that you go with the Nexus S. It is better than the iPhone in most ways. What you lose with the slightly less impressive screen and iOS’s slightly slicker user experience you will more than make up for with the Nexus S’s ability to actually make phone calls that don’t drop and Google’s exceptional Navigation and voice input applications. The fact that the phone is unlocked and can be used abroad with other carriers is also a very big plus.(techcrunch.com)

The microsoft Zune HD mp3 player is now available for pre ordering via Amazon. As per Amazon's preorder page 16GB Zune HD Black for $220 (Rs. 10,560 approx.) and 32GB Zune HD Platinum for $290 (Rs. 13,920 approx.).

The new Microsoft Zune HD Mp3 player is considered as the perect competer to the iPod Touch. while comparing the prices the 16GB Zune HD costs $220 (Rs. 10,560 approx.)and second generation 16GB iPod Touch costs $299 (Rs. 14,400 approx.), 32GB Zune HD costs $290 which is way cheaper than the 32GB iPod Touch which costs $399 (Rs. 19,200 approx.). Here the Zune makes a strong position over the iPod Touch.

Microsoft Zune HD mp3 player comes with a HDMI port and an integrated Bing's search which is a surprise element to all. Another advantage of Microsoft Zune HD player is that it can be used as an external storage device without a third party program. But Apple iPod Touch doesn't support these features evenif it can be used as an external storage device by using some softwares.

While Microsoft comes with the new Zune HD Mp3 player, Apple is coming with its latest 3rd generation iPod Touch that comes with an integrated camera. No other specifications of Apple iPod Touch 3G is not available now so we can't compare these two now.

Now a days many iPhone applications are coming. Recently Canon USA introduced a new easy photo-print iPhone application for the iPhone users. With the new easy photo-print app from canon iPhone users can now easily manage items to be printed and print the photos wirelessly by using the app.

The easy photo-print app enables the iPhone users to print photos from their Apple device to a compatible Canon Pixma printer via a wireless network. Canon's new iPhone app allows the user to print the photos as large as 8 1/2 x 11 on six different types of paper. With the Canon app, users can customize their prints by selecting a different paper size, media type or border style.

The position of the Microphone is changed to the rear side from the bottom. The size of the click wheel below the display is reduced a lot.
The new 5th generation iPod Nano from Apple has a polished anodized aluminium finish. The new Ipod nano uses the same classic iPod UI. Only change comes in is the addition of the video camera menu. Clicking on the option starts the camera instantly with the same shutter opening animation on the iPhone. There was many complaints about the inavailability of FM radio in the Apple iPods and the now the complaints got solved as Apple has put in an FM radio in the new iPod Nano. The FM radio application is very well done and has a superb interface design, supports RDS and more importantly has Live Pause feature, which actually pauses the radio broadcast all the while recording it to the memory and the nano can record up to 15 minutes of radio.

Other major features are Pedometer ane the VoiceOver. Apple added the accelerometer in the nano to even greater use than just rotating the display orientation. The Pedometer also calculates your steps and als calculates the calories you lost during taking these steps. All you have to do is to enter your weight and and then just slip the device in your pocket. VoiceOver feature is the same that is equipped in iPod Shufflewhich has been carried over from the iPod shuffle and this features tells you about the track playing in the Nano.

Apple company claims that the new 5th gen iPod Nano offers 24 hours for audio playback and five hours for video playback. Overall the new Apple Ipod Nano is a perfect multimedia player with many improved features. The iPod Nano fifth generation player comes in seven different colours - silver, charcoal, purple, blue, green, orange and pink. Also it will be available in 2 models - 8GB and 16 GB. The new iPod nano are priced at Rs. 9,400 for the 8 GB model while the 16GB Apple iPod Nano will be available at a price of Rs. 11,200.

Nikon D90 digital SLR camera test : The D90 as a possible successor to the D80 was a consistent rumor in the air. Yet two years would pass by before the Nikon D90 was actually here. The moment we held the Nikon D90 in our hands for the first time, we had to search for the differences in the design, though. Minor adjustments of the design with neater and clearer curves, confirm it is indeed the new Nikon DSLR. Naturally, the main changes are found inside the camera. Here, Nikon has altered many things to enable the Nikon D90 to connect to the line of new DSLR cameras such as the D300, D700 and D3.

10.2 Megapixel Nikon D90 SLR camera
First, there is the different image sensor. Whereas the Nikon D80 was equipped with a 10.2 Megapixel CCD sensor, the Nikon D90 features the newly developed 12.3 Megapixel CMOS sensor. This is an important fact, since Nikon claims that in combination with Nikon's EXPEED processor, this sensor is able to deliver a high ISO performance that will lift the camera to the level of the D300. In addition, the monitor on the back has been renewed. Where it was already a vast improvement to have a 3 inch instead of a 2.4 inch monitor, the enhanced resolution to VGA quality will considerably improve the reproduction of the monitor.

Live View integrated in the Nikon D90
Naturally, Live View is available, a feature that until recently was unthinkable for a DSLR camera, and has now become almost a 'must'. Nikon has stepped ahead with the integration of Live View, and has implemented a mode that might become a 'standard' on future generations of digital SLR cameras; Video mode. For the purists, this is like swearing in church, however, there's no stopping the innovative process. It makes the Nikon D90 the first DSLR camera in the world offering the possibility to capture videos in 720p HDTV quality. This scoop lasted only for a very short time; Canon followed quickly with the EOS 5D Mark II.

Yet the D90 does not aim at the semipro market, instead it aims at the amateur market. Some carriers prevent the use of custom ringtones which are in MP3 format (.mp3). The solution is to convert such ringtones into the Windows Media Audio format (.wma), or to use free, third-party software to remove these provider locks.

The phone supports MicroSD cards up to 2 GB (4 GB with the 6301 variant), meaning that the phone can be used practically as an MP3 player. Using the supplied and freely available Nokia PC Suite, one can convert all the MP3 files in a music library to e-AAC in order to fit more on the card. However, the 2.5mm headphone jack means that few commercial headsets will fit the phone but an optional headset, Nokia Stereo Headset model HS-81 (made By Sennheiser exclusively for Nokia), does offer as a better alternate replacement for the supplied standard headset due to its better bass sound reproduction quality.

Like most other new Nokia phones, the 6300 eschews their old pop port for a standard mini-USB connector. The cover over the connector is extremely difficult to remove at first but taking the back off the phone makes this easier.

With the latest firmware version (currently 6.01, not available for some local models such as North American) Nokia 6300 is capable of smoothly playing MPEG-4 (*.mp4) files with a QCIF resolution (176*144) and a frame rate of up to 25 frames per second. The phone allows the user to view the video clips in full-screen landscape mode and set the fast-forward/rewind interval from a few seconds to minutes. In addition, video clips can replace ringtones so that an actual motion picture is shown while there is an incoming call.

The Nokia N95 (N95-1, internally known as RM-159) is a smartphone produced by Nokia. The N95's functions include those of a camera phone and portable media player, in addition to offering e-mail, web browsing, local Wi-Fi connectivity and text messaging. It is part of the company's Nseries line of smartphones. The N95 runs on Symbian OS v9.2, with an S60 3rd Edition platform with Feature Pack 1. The phone uses a two-way slider to access either media playback buttons or a numeric keypad. Three newer versions have also been released: the upgraded N95 8GB (N95-2), the N95-3, which adds 3G support for North America, and the N95-4 which is an America-targeted version of the N95-2.
